Northwest Syria: Women continue to face substantial health challenges amid funding shortfalls

For more than a decade, MSF has witnessed how women in Syria – as the rest of the population – have been directly impacted by the conflict and its consequences. Many live in poor conditions, suffer from food insecurity and struggle to access healthcare. Even the normal stages in a woman’s life, such as menstruation, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, become a complex burden. The fragile health system and the widening funding gaps in northwest Syria are negatively impacting the availability of sexual and reproductive services, essential to the health of pregnant women and their new-borns. MSF has been offering sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services to women in northwest Syria since 2012 and in 2021, we had to step up our activities to respond to an increase of patients in our supported facilities. This package aims at drawing attention to the health challenges that women are facing when it comes to sexual and reproductive health in northwest Syria, to highlight MSF’ sexual and reproductive health response in the region, and to show the need for an urgent increase in funding such activities.
