After 11 years of war, northwestern Syria now hosts 2.7 million people, 80 percent of whom are women and children. With humanitarian needs growing, the region’s battered health system is facing dire challenges, including a lack of funding, making essential services like prenatal care and breastfeeding support increasingly difficult to access. “Every time we go to the hospital, I find that the services are unavailable,” said Fatima, a displaced person living in Idlib governorate. “They told me that the hospital where my daughter was born is now closed. It used to provide good services.” In response, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) stepped up activities to fill the gaps, assisting 50 percent more deliveries in three hospitals in Idlib governorate in 2021 and responding to a 200 percent increase in Caesarean sections.
