Strengthening Cancer Care Across the Patient Journey in Morobe, Papua New Guinea

In Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, cancer is a growing public health challenge, with most patients seeking care only at advanced stages due to late presentation and limited health system capacity.

At ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital in Lae, many patients require end‑of‑life care, often with limited access to palliative support. To address these gaps, MSF, in collaboration with local health authorities, launched the Morobe Cancer Initiative in September 2025. Based at ANGAU Hospital, this long‑term initiative focuses on strengthening continuity across the cancer care pathway and improving access to quality palliative care. The goal is to build a sustainable cancer care model that reduces suffering and improves patient’s quality of life.
