Strengthening healthcare for survivors of violence, Jiwaka, Papua New Guinea

MSF is working to strengthen existing healthcare services for survivors of all forms of violence in Jiwaka province, Papua New Guinea.

In mid-2024, MSF launched a pilot project in Jiwaka province, in the Western Highlands region of PNG, to strengthen healthcare services for survivors of all forms of violence. In addition to gender-based violence, the region faces regular violence between tribal groups, as well as periodic episodes of election-related violence. Other forms of violence include sorcery-related violence, where people (usually vulnerable women) accused of sorcery are violently attacked.

The region has a lack of healthcare facilities and those that do exist are under resourced in terms of staff, medicines and supplies, and sometimes closed due to episodes of fighting. Rather than direct provision of care, MSF is working in partnership with existing healthcare providers such as the provincial health authority and faith-based organisations to strengthen the delivery of services. This includes providing health promotion, training for healthcare workers and coordination across the referral pathway.
