Since April 01 this year, MSF has started providing basic medical services in Leer town, aimed at improving access to maternal, reproductive and emergency care for the population in the area. MSF’s services include a stabilization unit for patients presenting with severe medical conditions, a maternity ward, antenatal consultations and emergency care for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

During the first three weeks of April, 343 patients benefited from medical attention provided by MSF in Leer town. The team ensured 198 antenatal care consultations and supported 34 pregnant women in its maternity ward, including 10 deliveries. Additionally, 111 patients were treated in the stabilization unit, the majority children under five suffering from severe diarrhea and respiratory tracts infections, as well as dehydration and malnutrition.

MSF also supports the referral of patients in need of further medical treatment to other facilities. So far, patients have been referred to a medical structure in Leer town for outpatient consultations. Additionally, with the support of another local health actor, four patients were sent to MSF hospital in Bentiu Protection of Civilian (PoC) site for specialized and surgical care.
