New Fistula Care in Baidoa Offers Hope for Somali Women

At the MSF-supported 20-bed obstetric fistula unit at Bay Regional Hospital in Baidoa, launched in August 2025, women from across Southwest State and beyond can seek free, confidential treatment and counselling. Across Somalia, low coverage of skilled birth attendance, long distances to facilities and delays in emergency obstetric care mean prolonged labour can lead to obstetric fistula, while specialised repair has long been scarce and many women wait years for help. These photos document moments from the ward and recovery rooms, pre- and post-operative care, counselling, and the quiet work of staff strengthening referrals and follow-up to reduce stigma and support recovery. MSF in collaboration with Ministry of Health offers regular, integrated, comprehensive obstetric fistula management that includes both prevention and management, the management part includes surgical repair, mental health, nutrition, social reintegration and soon would include physiotherapy.
