Strengthening healthcare and advocacy to improve access to drug-resistant TB treatment in Beira

Tuberculosis (TB), including drug-resistant TB (DR-TB), remains a major public health concern in Mozambique, where the burden of drug-resistant TB is one of the highest in the world, making access to effective treatment crucial.
Over the years, MSF has worked closely with local communities and the Mozambican Ministry of Health to advocate for second-line TB therapies and address systemic barriers to care. Despite these efforts, many people with co-infections of HIV and drug-resistant TB continue to face difficulties in accessing life-saving treatment.
When the patient Raul arrived at Beira Central Hospital (HCB), in December of 2024, he was severely ill, co-infected with HIV and drug-resistant tuberculosis. His condition caught the attention of the MSF medical teams, and with the support of local Ministry of Health staff, MSF teams were able to intervene and advocate for Raul to access second-line TB treatment. Since starting the appropriate treatment, Raul has continued to improve his health.
