Insecurity and funding cuts in Yei, Central Equatoria

MSF started working in Yei, Central Equatoria, in 1983, providing basic health care for more than 100,000 refugees living in camps around Yei, after fleeing the civil war in Uganda. 40 years later, both displaced and local communities are trying to survive while facing many life-threatening challenges. Since 2016, armed forces have been continuously fighting in the area, ending up in recurrent people displacements. Yei is also facing an increase of South Sudanese returnees arriving from the IDP Camp at the border with Uganda, as food supply distributions and other aid were cut on the Ugandan side of the border. Moreover, since 2022, humanitarian actors have been down-scaling operations in the region, dangerously weakening healthcare access for both displaced and local communities.

To ensure access to healthcare for displaced populations and isolated communities, MSF conducts regular mobile clinics in seven different outreach locations in Yei and Morobo counties. The teams also conduct integrated community case management (ICCM) activities in several villages in the area.

At the Jansuk Clinic, in the outskirts of Yei, one of the very few functioning medical facilities of the area, MSF provides primary healthcare to displaced and local communities: outpatient consultations, routine vaccination, antenatal care, family planning, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) care, mental health services and health promotion.
