Providing healthcare in post-conflict context: Maternal health in Kajo Keji, South Sudan

Eight years after the civil war that led to mass displacement of the population, healthcare is still a fight in Kajo Keji, Central Equatoria. Communities are slowly coming back from Uganda but accessing functioning health facilities remains a major challenge, especially for pregnant women. The lack of functioning health facilities in the county forces them to travel long distances in difficult conditions, putting both their life and their baby’s life in danger.

Mundary County hospital in Kajo Keji, supported by MSF, is the only secondary healthcare facility for the whole county. One year after the hospital reopened, our teams remain the only ones to provide pre-delivery care for pregnant women presenting with complications, delivery and obstetrical surgeries in case of complications, medical care for sick newborn babies, ante-natal and post-natal care. From February 2023 to 2024, our teams provided life-saving care to 272 mothers and 281 babies.
