MSF has been providing primary healthcare to the nomadic population of Pibor, in Eastern South Sudan, since 2005 and runs activities in three structures: Pibor Primary Healthcare Centre and in Lekongwole and Gumuruk Primary Healthcare Units.

Physical access challenges in providing healthcare to a nomadic people remain year round, not just for MSF in reaching the population, but also for the population to reach MSF.

Now, throughout the on-going dry season, people have migrated with their cattle to cattle camps some 40-60km away in search of grazing and water. When people move away from the main roads and rivers where they stay during the rainy season, they also move away from the limited medical facilities in the area. MSF is one of only three health actors present in this region.

Womens’ reproduction aspirations and nomadic culture make it difficult to provide maternal healthcare that serves the population’s needs. In addition to the maternal and reproductive healthcare provided by MSF at the Primary Healthcare Centre in Pibor town, MSF offers a special 'mothers' waiting house' for pregnant women who travel long distances to seek a safe delivery. Women with high-risk pregnancies identified at the outreach units are also referred to the Primary Healthcare Clinic.
