Floods in Pibor

The torrential rains that began early last week continue to threaten the life of people in Pibor, Maban, and refugees hosted in Doro Camp.
“The water has cut off electricity in our health structures. If a pregnant woman needs emergency surgery, we fear we might lose her and the baby,” says Alberto Zerboni, MSF Operations Coordinator.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has launched emergency assessments across South Sudan. Severe flooding has left people stranded in swathes of inaccessible areas and threatens to make worse an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

Pibor and Maban have been worst affected. In Pibor, as water levels continued to rise, the primary healthcare centre and compound became entirely flooded and forced the team to reduce life-saving activities and discharge patients. On Thursday October 17th, construction of a temporary tented facility began, but this is expected to flood in the coming days. The official forced closure of the old PHCC happened on Saturday 19th October, cutting off patients and the community from access to healthcare.

MSF’s attention is now on conducting aerial and ground assessments to understand the broader impact and to adapt our existing activities in Pibor town to a continuously changing situation.
