Providing Healthcare and water to those most in need in SNNPR, Ethiopia.

Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopa is a particularly ethnically diverse region inhabited by more than 80 ethnic groups, of which over 45 are indigenous to the region. In the last months of 2020, a series of intercommunal conflicts broke out in SNNPR’s Konso Zone and the Special Woredas of Alle, Derashe, Burji and Amaro. Entire villages were burnt to the ground and thousands of families were displaced from their homes. Health posts, as well as schools and other important infrastructure were destroyed, restricting access to healthcare and essential services at a moment when the community needed it the most.

An MSF team arrived in the affected area in mid-December 2020 and began providing primary health care, rehabilitating the existing clean water infrastructure and training health care workers to prepare for future outbreaks of both infectious disease, like measles in January 20. As a part of its programs, MSF mobile clinics,staffed with dedicated health staff from across Ethiopia, depart daily, crossing numerous frontlines, to provide primary healthcare for both those displaced during the conflict and their host communities in 15 separate locations.
