Marib: Health needs to grow in what was considered the ”safe haven” of Yemen

Marib governorate: Despite the economic boom it is experiencing, Marib is facing challenges. Due to the fighting and comparative instability found elsewhere in Yemen, many people have sought refuge in Marib. The governorate has absorbed hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs), the majority of whom are residing in Marib city.
MSF is providing primary healthcare through mobile clinics serving nine sites in and around Marib city. The target populations are IDPs, African migrants and Al-Muhamasheen, a minority group that suffers discrimination and exclusion in Yemen.
Before the conflict the local population of Marib governorate was estimated to be 240,000less than 400,000. IOM numbers show over 850,000 displaced Yemenis have since arrived to the governorate. The sharp increase of population during the conflict is putting pressure on the existing infrastructure in the city and there are many unmet needs among the displaced people as well as migrants and Al-Muhamasheen. With the onset of conflict in 2015, organisations have prioritized providing healthcare to areas with most active frontlines or ’hotspots’ such as Saada, Hajja, Hodeidah, Taiz.
Due to intensified fighting on Marib’s western frontlines since the beginning of 2020, several thousand people were displaced inside Marib governorate. Many of them were then displaced a second or third time, meaning they were already living in IDP camps and moved to other camps in central Marib or they moved in with local families. On 15 February the fighting intensified again and reached new areas close to town, displacing approximately 1000 households. About 200 of those have been located in areas within reach of MSF mobile clinic sites, and more than 600 households have settled in a camp outside of town.
