Since April 2018, the humanitarian situation in southern Ethiopia has been deteriorating. Violence between communities along the border areas of Gedeo Zone (Southern Nations, Nationalities and People Region – SNNPR) and West Guji Zone (Oromiya Region) has led to the displacement of over 800,000 people since 13 April 2018, most becoming displaced in June alone when violence escalated. Most people have fled to the Gedeo region of SNNPR where, according to official figures, 500,000 people are now living with the host communities and 300,000 people are sheltering in collective sites like schools, government buildings, training centers, churches, unfinished buildings and abandoned industrial facilities. These sites are not fit for human habitation and are extremely overcrowded, forcing many people to sleep in the open, unsheltered from the elements. The water and sanitation conditions are catastrophic and expose the population to a high risk of outbreaks. The health and nutrition situation is so far manageable but very fragile. MSF is building latrines and installing water and sanitation infrastructure in IDP sites in Gdeo and West Guji zones, including trucking clean water to provide people with immediate access to drinking water. At the same time, we are conducting outreach activities and supporting health centres and hospitals with primary and secondary healthcare services, including paediatric care, maternity, therapeutic feeding and stabilization care.
