One year on: soaring needs in Twic, South Sudan

Following violent clashes in early February 2022 in and around Agok, Abyei Special Administrative Area, residents fled north to Abyei town and south into Twic County in South Sudan’s Warrap State. Of these, around 40,000 people settled in Twic area. In an already neglected region which lacks food, water, and healthcare services, and faces recurrent outbreaks of diseases, the influx of displaced populations, added an extra burden for the whole population of Twic County. The recent floods that affected particularly the west side of the County worsened again the dire situation especially regarding food security.

MSF moved its activities from Agok in March 2022 to respond to the urgent needs of the newly displaced people, the majority of whom being women and children. While organising food, shelter and non-food items distributions at the start of crisis, MSF teams ran mobile clinics in the makeshift camps and constructed water points and latrines. From August 2023, MSF work shifted from an emergency response to the humanitarian needs to a comprehensive and decentralised offer of medical care through the support of an 86-bed hospital, two health posts and four sites which provide healthcare services by trained community health workers. The volume of patients received in the MSF supported healthcare facilities, as well as the main treated diseases (such as malaria, malnutrition, respiratory infection, and diarrhoea) reflect the over-all situation of health needs of the population, both host communities and displaced, who are currently around 30,000 in the region.

One year after the displacement, those in need still stand at ground zero as there are major gaps in delivery of humanitarian assistance. As MSF is already stretched offering primary and secondary healthcare services, more support from other humanitarian actor for food, water, sanitation and shelter is urgently needed anticipating the rainy season starting soon, which will put the population in an even worse dire situation.
