VOICE NOTE AR Maissam Hamoui Intensive Care Supervisor Sica Hospital

On 25 June, 2025, a power transformer exploded at Bangui's Barthelemy Boganda High School during a baccalaureate exam. The explosion and subsequent fire caused chaos, with candidates rushing out of the school by any means possible due to the limited number of emergency exits. Some candidates were pushed to jump from balconies. Several people died during this incident, and many were wounded.

CAR authorities organised the emergency response, sending ambulances to transport patients to nearby hospitals, including two facilities where MSF has teams: the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Communautaire (CHUC — the closest hospital to the school, to which most patients were taken) and the SICA hospital run by MSF. Our teams have been supporting the provision of first aid, triage and provision of care. Additional medical teams from MSF's emergency response unit in CAR (EURECA) have also been deployed in CHUC to assist with medication and the provision of care.
