My name is Yahya Kalilah. I am the head of program of MSF and Afghanistan. I am currently in Herat to support the team and emergency response due to the earthquake. Based on the last report from the Ministry of Health and the Herat Regional Hospital, the earthquake has resulted in 2445 reported deaths and 2440 injuries. The majority of these cases are children and females. In response to a call from a hospital, the MSF team in Herat immediately mobilized to support in addressing the casualties. We have dispatched mass casualty kits sufficient for 400 patients and we set up five tents in the hospital to accommodate approximately eighty patients. Since the day of the earthquake, our team has been present in the hospital, working closely with the Ministry of Health Staff. Currently, the situation remains critical with around 340 patients still being treated in the hospital. As we said, the majority are children and females. And the classification of these cases is between mild and moderate. Most of these cases are ready to be discharged, but there is no place to go. Most of them, they don't have houses to go there. The authorities are actively working and finding appropriate locations for these people. In the meantime, the MSF team, in collaboration with the MoH staff, is still providing the care, post-operative care for these patients in the hospital.
