Around 4 million people are estimated to live in northwest Syria and 2.7 million of them are internally displaced persons (IDPs). Ten years of conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic and a severe economic crisis have aggravated people’s vulnerability and most of them now rely partially or fully on humanitarian aid to survive. On top of its regular medical activities in Northwest Syria, MSF has been trying to ensure access to better hygiene and clean water in camps for IDPs, where the living conditions are particularly challenging. But these activities, as well as the overall humanitarian response in the region, might be compromised by the upcoming vote of the UN Security Council regarding the UN cross-border resolution on July 10, 2021. MSF will launch a package which aims to highlight the tremendous needs in northwest Syria, with a particular focus on the situation of people living in camps and their reliance on humanitarian assistance. This package is meant to support the briefing paper and press release (issued on 18 June) calling for the renewal of the cross-border resolution, as an illustrative example of the situation and what could be at stake with the non-renewal of the resolution.
