On Sunday 29 September a fire erupted in Moria camp, on Lesbos island, reportedly killing two people, a woman and a child. After the fire, tension escalated between the population of the camp and the police who started to launch tear gas to try to control the crowd. MSF treated 30 wounded people as a consequence of the clashes, 8 of which were stabilized and referred to the local hospital. This tragic event doesn’t come as a surprise but it is the result of a European policy of containment that is trapping thousands of people in inadequate centers on the Greek island. As a consequence of an increase of arrivals in the last three months, the situation is even more unbearable with more than 13000 people living in appalling conditions in a camp built for 3000. MSF continues to call for the urgent of evacuation of vulnerable cases and for the end of the EU Turkey deal and the policy of containment.
