One by One, Hospitals Are Damaged and Closed in El Fasher as Fighting Rages On

El Fasher, North Darfur’s capital in Sudan, has been caught in non-stop fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces since 10 May, with the casualties mounting. Tens of thousands of people are fleeing El Fasher, many arriving to Zamzam camp where an estimated 300,000 people already resided, and MSF has been responding to a catastrophic malnutrition crisis. Nutritional surveys carried out in January, and again in March and April, revealed malnutrition rates were double the emergency threshold amongst children, and among pregnant and breastfeeding women, signaling a massive, life-threatening crisis. The conflict has impacted our teams; some have evacuated and are working remotely, while many of those remaining have also been displaced. This situation makes it very difficult to obtain updated information on malnutrition rates, but the increased displacement of people, and the new difficulties created by heavy fighting in accessing food due to security concerns and market disruptions, the situation is likely to be alarming.
