Like many regions across Sudan, Gedaref State faces significant challenges due to the ongoing conflict. In neighbouring Al Jazirah state, increased fighting and violence in November led to a renewed wave of displacement, with people fleeing to Gedaref.


This happened at the same time as a cholera outbreak continues to wreak havoc in the east of Sudan, with people already weakened by their long arduous journeys to safety. People, many of whom have fled their homes multiple times since the war started, lack access to adequate water sanitation and hygiene services. Fighting has also increased in Sennar state in recent weeks, creating yet more displacement to Gedaref.


More displaced people in the midst of a cholera outbreak adds pressure on already strained health facilities. MSF has been actively responding to these needs, operating a hospital in Tanedba town that serves both the local community and the influx of internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugees. Additionally, MSF runs mobile clinics in Harrira and Boadra to extend care to IDPs.


At its peak, the cholera treatment centre at Al Fao hospital was receiving large numbers of patients in critical conditions. MSF ran an emergency response to assist the MOH and to save lives. Now the peak is subsiding in AL Fao, MSF will hand the acitivites back to the MOH, to allow our teams capacity to respond to future emergencies. The cholera outbreak continues in Gedaref state, and other MSF responses continue in Gedaref city, and Tanedba hospital.
