More than six months after the start of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, around 500,000 people have fled the violence to take refuge in Chad, the majority in the Ouaddaï province. In addition to the precarious camps where hundreds of thousands of refugees from Sudan's Darfur region have been living for two decades, new sites have been set up in the space of a few weeks by the authorities, UN agencies and their partners to house the latest mass arrivals of refugees. This new crisis is exacerbating the problems already present in eastern Chad, such as lack of access to water, food insecurity and recurring epidemics.

MSF teams in Adré have stepped up their medical and humanitarian activities since mid-April, at the hospital, on the border and in the refugee camps. Although the local authorities and humanitarian actors are mobilising strongly, the immediate needs of the refugees and the localities hosting them are still far from being met, and the humanitarian response has been overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis.
