In 2001, MSF set up one of its first antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs at the Arua regional referral hospital to provide antiretroviral (ARV) treatment to local people living with HIV.
This program has then expanded to include the treatment of people co-infected with HIV and tuberculosis, and to establish better decentralization of care.
Good results have been achieved after years of specific efforts to improve care especially for HIV-positive adolescents and children, adults with high viral loads or suspected treatment failure, people on second- or third-line treatment, and people with advanced forms of HIV.
In addition to working with HIV-positive patients, MSF has worked to reduce mortality in the TB-MDRTB isolation unit and provided a "One-Stop" service for victims of sexual violence, focusing on minors and male victims, as well as raising community awareness.
In September 2023, the project is handed over to the Ministry of Health and the ICRC.
