MSF HIV program in Bangui

MSF’s newly opened HIV ward in Hôpital Communautaire in Bangui is seeing startlingly high numbers of patients in late stages of AIDS.

The country has one of the lowest HIV treatment coverage rates in the world (18% average). Since 2013, the widespread violence brought HIV testing and treatment provision to a halt.
Overall, HIV treatment is severely lacking in many ‘low prevalence’ countries in West and Central Africa, where only 1 out of 4 people with HIV having access to treatment.

MSF is calling for an urgent action plan to address the critical lack of HIV treatment, including urgent access to HIV treatment in Central African Republic, with contingency plans for people on treatment in case of renewed violence.
