Opened in August 2015 and implemented for a three-year duration, the project we lead in Goma, eastern DRC, aim at improving the treatment of HIV, by supporting five health structures in the city. The focus is on improving the screening, both in health care facilities and through proactive campaigns during city events (markets, ...), as well as reducing the number of patients lost or abandoning their treatment (about 50% of the cohort before the start of the project). Today, among the 2,638 HIV-positive people followed in the five health centers we support, about 1,250 are receiving antiretroviral therapy, and 70-90 additional people are included in the cohort every month. For the record, although HIV prevalence is relatively low in the DRC in general (1.2% according to official figures) and Goma (estimated at 2%), access to care for people with HIV is complicated, especially because access to screening and care are charged, and because of difficulties in the decentralization of care to peripheral health facilities, and stigma.
