In Mozambique, while the number of people living with HIV/AIDS on treatment has quadrupled since 2010, increasing antiretroviral (ART) coverage to 54% from 218,000 to 990,000, retention in care is low at 70%. An important percentage of PLHIV continue to present with diseases related to advanced HIV due to ART treatment failure, interruption of treatment or late diagnosis leading to delayed treatment. Cancers also represent a growing burden in Mozambique, and most of them are HIV infection related. With little response to detecting and addressing advanced HIV, MSF sees AIDS patients dying of opportunistic infections including TB, Kaposi Sarcoma, cryptococcal meningitis and bacterial infections. In Maputo MSF is implementing and developing innovative strategies and packages of care to detect and treat these neglected patients, and simplify the diagnosis, management and treatment as well as follow up of advanced diseases related to HIV.

In the Referral Centre of Alto Mae (CRAM) in Maputo, MSF offers specialized ambulatory care using innovative strategies for complicated HIV/AIDS, HIV late presenters, ART treatment failures, co-infections or co-morbidities such as KS, and opportunistic infections.
