MSF is currently present in Serbia in the south Serbian-Bulgarian border region in Pirot and at the Serbian-Hungarian border region in the north. By the time patients reach MSF medical team on the Serbian side of the Bulgarian border, they have experienced various traumatic events en route. Since January 2023, the beginning of the project in Pirot, MSF medical team treated 1,944 patients. 475 people were assessed and treated for traumatic injuries, like frostbites, trench foot, and general signs of physical exhaustion, caused mostly by the harsh conditions of their journey. In the Northern border region, MSF regularly visits informal settlements to treat people who lack even the minimum standards of living conditions: heating, water and sanitation, and access to medical care. Since 2022 MSF conducted 7,826 medical consultations, mostly for infectious skin diseases e.g. scabies, accidental trauma injuries, generalized aches and pain, and upper respiratory tract infections as well as people presenting injuries as a result of violent incident with border forces. In the north of Serbia, MSF have treated approximately 500 people that reported contusions, skin and articular lesions because of violent incidents with border authorities at the Serbian-Hungarian border. Patients report other forms of inhuman and degrading treatment including different forms of humiliation, confiscation and destruction of personal belongings.
