TB patients in Myanmar

Until 2019, global progress was made tackling the infectious disease tuberculosis (TB), but the combination of COVID-19 and the collapse of Myanmar's healthcare system after the military takeover stalled and reversed this improvement in 2020 and 2021. Through collaboration between NGOs and the National Tuberculosis Programme, testing and identification of TB in Myanmar is now gradually moving back towards WHO targets – and is only just below what it was in 2019. But this progress is fragile, and improvement is due to the support and funding of NGOs who have made up for staff shortages and reduced lab testing capabilities. The gaps in the healthcare system created by the violence and instability since 2021 are still very apparent.
