Tuberculosis in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan still ranks in one of the highest burden TB countries in the world. At least one in four new TB patients presenting with the drug resistant strain of the disease.

Since 2012, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is running a drug-resistant TB program in Kara Suu district in the Osh region in the south of the country.

MSF operates in a district where rates of TB are among the highest in the country. The activities have a two pronged approach: teams support the 80-bed Kara-Suu TB hospital, but whenever possible, patients receive care through the community-based healthcare system. This allows the medical care to be adapted to the patient’s needs and the family is more involved in providing support to the patient, which goes a long way to ensuring successful completion of treatment. Hospitalisation is kept for patients in a severe condition.
