EU and Greek migration policies have become more restrictive over recent years, limiting safe pathways for people seeking safety and creating under-resourced conditions in reception centres. As a result, the hardships faced by those fleeing conflict are exacerbated, undermining their rights to safety, protection and dignity.

In the Closed Controlled Access Centre (CCAC) in Lesvos, around 1,200 people live in undignified conditions, with a lack of access to basic necessities such as water, food and balanced nutrition, cash assistance and privacy. MSF patients in Lesvos have endured a variety of severe incidents and traumatic experiences during their journey or upon arrival in Greece. The harsh conditions in the CCAC and prolonged asylum procedures compound their suffering and affect their mental health.

MSF team in Lesvos provides primary health care services, including mental health and sexual and reproductive health services, as well as emergency medical assistance for new arrivals. Furthermore, to ensure that individuals receive the necessary support, our multidisciplinary approach also comprises health promotion, intercultural mediation and social and legal services.
