Stigma around mental health is widespread. Many people conceal their struggles for fear of being labelled weak, cursed, or possessed, while families often hide relatives with severe conditions rather than seeking help. In Malakal County of Upper Nile states, MSF teams have observed many patients with mental health disorders sent to prison by their families for lack of medical access or awareness. This combination of overwhelming need, minimal services, and strong social stigma has made mental health one of South Sudan’s most pressing but least addressed public health challenges.
