When natural disasters, conflicts or disease outbreaks hit, MSF quickly reacts to provide urgent medical care to thousands of people in need.

The challenges are enormous to quickly bring medical personnel, medicines and supplies to hard-to-reach places. It also requires a lot of energy, both for transporting and for running our operations, thus contributing to climate change.
Our goal as doctors is to give people better health, not to harm them, so we have decided that we must reduce our carbon emissions in half by 2030.
That’s why we’ve devised a clear action plan to halve our carbon emissions, focusing on four major areas;
1. TRANSPORTATION – by reducing our use of planes for people, drugs and hospital equipment whenever possible, using vehicles that consume less fuel and stockpiling essential supplies in strategic parts of the world.
2. ENERGY – by better insulating our pharmacies, health centers and warehouses and by using renewable energy sources
3. SOURCING – buying materials and supplies locally, and partnering with suppliers who are also dedicated to reducing their emissions
4. CHANGING BEHAVIOR – working with our staff to use less energy in our work, to reduce waste, reuse and recycle wherever possible and changing our organizational culture to reflect these goals.
We are adapting the way we work to reduce our environmental footprint. It won’t be easy, due to the size of our organisation and the kind of work we do, but we are determined to get there. Saving lives will always be our number one priority.
