On 15 January 2021, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Majene Regency in the province of West Sulawesi, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Strong shaking was reported in Majene and the provincial capital Mamuju for at least 5-7 seconds. Widespread damage was reported throughout 4 out of 5 regencies in the province. More than 6,000 structures were damaged or destroyed in the region. At least 105 people were confirmed dead and more than 3,300 were injured, while thousands of residents were displaced due to the earthquake. Following swift approval from the Ministry of Health's (MoH) Crisis Centre, the mission deployed an explo team consisting of a medical doctor, a nurse, a logistician/watsan, and a psychologist to conduct assessments and direct intervention support on the Mamuju earthquake, all in coordination with the MoH Health Cluster.

The team treated 346 patients, though some consultations were not recorded in villages in the Tapalang Sub-district, Tapalang Barat Sub-district, Ulumanda Sub-district and Karampuang Island. The team also reached very remote areas of Ulumanda Sub-district -- Ulumanda, Tandeallo, and Popengan Villages -- during the response. Top morbidities include Gastritis, Hypertension, Myalgia/General Ache, Cephalgia, and Upper Respiratory Infections (URI). There were not many direct or indirect health problems related to the earthquake seen. A total of 200 hygiene kits were distributed to those temporarily displaced. Psychological First Aid (PFA) training was facilitated for 25 community health volunteers and 18 volunteers from the Health Cluster/ Psychosocial cluster. Direct PFA was also provided for 11 patients suffering from the immediate effects of the earthquake and other health-related conditions. Watsan assessments were carried out and advice given to local actors and the national emergency logistical cluster.
