But first, some background:
2003
An uprising by non-Arab rebel groups in Darfur. The government responds with a violent counterinsurgency campaign and arms the Arab Janjaweed militias.
2013
The Government creates the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with roots in Janjaweed, to combat the armed groups that still remain in Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile.

2019
President Omar al-Bashir is overthrown by the military in the context of a popular uprising after nearly 30 years in power. The army forms a Transitional Military Council.
2021
A military government is reestablished following a coup d'état by the army and the RSF.

Back to the beginning
April 15, 2023
Following prolonged tension within the military, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF clashed in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The RSF seized control of the city, and the conflict spread to other parts of the country.

June 2023
The governor of West Darfur, a member of the non-Arab Masalit ethnic group, is assassinated. This triggers a wave of violence against the Masalit civilian population. Between 10,000 and 15,000 people are killed. This ethnic violence will spread to other parts of the country throughout the conflict.
The mass exodus of people to the neighboring countries of Chad and South Sudan prompts MSF to activate its emergency teams.

August 2024
Famine is declared in the Zamzam displaced persons camp (North Darfur). It is later confirmed in other areas of this state and in the Kordofan region.

That summer, MSF published the report ‘War Against People’ to denounce the horrific violence inflicted on the population by both sides of the conflict.

April 11, 2025
The RSF and its allies attack the Zamzam camp and carry out ethnically motivated massacres. More than 400,000 people flee.

From March to May 2025
The Armed Forces recapture Khartoum.
Cholera and measles spread.
Humanitarian aid continues to face the same obstacles we denounced in 2024.

October 26, 2025
The RSF take control of El Fasher (capital of North Darfur) after a 550-day siege. Further massacres of non-Arab ethnicities, particularly Zaghawa and Fur, occur.

3 years
Currently, the main battlefronts are in the Kordofan region and Blue Nile State. Drone attacks, a new feature of this war, are occurring throughout the rest of the country. Their use is becoming widespread.

Sudan has been devastated after three years of conflict between the SAF and the RSF, along with their respective allied groups. It is the most severe humanitarian crisis of our time.
