Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Toolkit

MSF has piloted an innovative Water, Sanitation and Hygiene toolkit in Harare, which will be rolled out to neighbouring Malawi and Mozambique, taking a comprehensive environmental health approach to curb outbreaks of water-borne infectious diseases like cholera and typhoid.

The toolkit contains a custom-fitted vehicle to diagnose and rehabilitate boreholes, latest technologies to site new boreholes, improved techniques for drilling and sealing them, and a community health club approach to manage water points.

Committee members oversee the provision of clean water to members who contribute a small monthly fee to pay for chlorine and maintenance of the points. As of end-2018, 50 rehabilitated boreholes and 9 newly drilled boreholes are now managed by more than 72 community health clubs in 13 high density residential suburbs in Harare.
