Between late December 2025 and January 2026,intense rainfall has caused severe flooding across southern and central Mozambique, particularly affecting Gaza, Maputo and Sofala provinces.
These floods are regarded as among the most severe in recent history. They have affected almost one million people, forcing many families to flee their homes and seek shelter in temporary accommodation centres or with host communities. Homes, farmland, roads and critical infrastructure have been damaged.

While national authorities mounted a rapid response that helped limit casualties and maintain health services in many locations, rural and hard‑to‑reach communities in Gaza, Maputo and Sofala provinces were among the most affected, with extensive damage to water systems, homes and farmland.

In response, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) carried out emergency activities to support the Ministry of Health‑led response and address urgent health needs. MSF teams reinforced capacities to handle cholera cases and carried out malaria prevention and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions. Activities included setting up and operating two Cholera Treatment Centres, mosquito net distributions in malaria hotspots, rehabilitation of damaged wells and boreholes, and health promotion to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.
Teams began progressively wrapping up the emergency intervention, while continuing to highlight the importance of preparedness, coordination and sustained public health measures in a country increasingly exposed to climate‑related emergencies and facing a publicly declared cholera epidemic.
