On Monday 10th December, the first international agreement on migration was adopted during the intergovernmental conference on the Global Compact for Migration in Marrakech.

On Tuesday 11th , Joanne Liu delivered a speech at the conference.

While overall the content of the Global Compact is positive in that it puts human life and dignity very much at the centre, the reality is that this doesn’t reflect at all what we see on the ground. 11 countries have so far withdrawn from the compact (USA, Austria, Australia, Chile, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, Slovakia, Dominican Republic) and at least another six are considering it. On the other hand, Mayors from solidarity cities in Europe and others who have been standing up for more humane policies are also going to the conference and have been supportive of the Compact. The aim of us being there is to share the testimony of what our teams see on the ground: the brutal impact migration policies are having on populations on the move.
