On 19 July 2023, Geo Barents arrived at Marina di Carrara, designated as the port of safety by Italian authorities, carrying 346 survivors. Sadly, only 213 of them were allowed to disembark then. On 20 July 2023, the remaining 135 children, women, and men were finally able to set foot on land in Livorno. According to the ‘Guidelines on the Treatment of Persons Rescued at Sea’, a rescue operation can only be considered completed once all survivors are disembarked in a place of safety. Only on 20 July 2023, with the disembarkation of the remaining survivors in Livorno, we could finally mark the completion of the rescue operations. We hope the survivors will receive the appropriate assistance and protection they deserve and need.
