An expecting couple is being supported through their health journey by MSF obstetrical teams and introduced to the Zero Separation approach for their baby delivery. Their testimony demonstrates how the Zero Separation approach thrives to integrate the patient & family perspective and needs in the medical activity by:
- understanding the real needs of mothers, babies and their close family as the basis of successful implementation
- putting mothers in the centre of decisions concerning their baby’s and their own health
- giving the alternative for a surrogate to step in when the mother cannot be involved
- ensuring culturally appropriate and respectful maternity care (e.g. ensuring presence of a companion of choice at birth)
- keeping the mother and/or close family members involved and in the centre of all medical decisions.
