Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been affected by flooding for several weeks due to torrential rains causing the Congo River to overflow its banks. Seven communes have been severely impacted, including Limeté, where MSF teams are currently responding. According to official data, 12 people are dead and 1177 homes have been destroyed. MSF has had a logistical and medical team deployed to the area since early January to respond to the needs of the stricken population. MSF has installed 6 latrines, 10 showers, 10 tents, lighting, and is providing fresh water to assist the 400 worst affected households (some 2100+ people, primarily women and children). As for medical assistance, MSF has sent a mobile clinic to offer primary health care as well as mental health care to the victims, with a particular focus on handicapped persons, who are the most vulnerable to this type of disaster. The primary pathologies recorded to date that have resulted from poor living conditions are malaria, urinary infections, and typhoid fever.
