Yemen has been experiencing a sharp surge in measles cases in the past four months. This comes amid a health and humanitarian context that continued to deteriorate during more than a decade of war and instability affecting the country. Year after year, MSF has seen surges in measles in Yemen due to inadequate vaccination coverage, limited access to healthcare services and weakened health infrastructure to contain and prevent the disease. In March, MSF’s Mobile Emergency Team (MET) saw a 219% increase in the numbers of measles in the Dhamar governorate compared to the same period of the previous year there. In response, the MET has been treating patients at the isolation ward of the governorate’s Al-Wahda hospital since April. In addition, MSF provide free medical consultations to measles patients through three mobile clinics that reach six districts in the governorate. This comms initiative sheds light on the outbreak and the response of the MET team. It also sheds light on the pressing need for more support to the primary healthcare system in Yemen to prevent further outbreaks amid declining humanitarian aid and ongoing healthcare challenges in Yemen.
