Measles: Recurring Outbreaks in South Sudan

In Lankien Jonglei state, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides primary and secondary healthcare including maternal, paediatric, trauma care as well as treatment for kala azar. Responding to recurring disease outbreaks is also a key activity by MSF in Lankien as the teams have been responding to measles outbreaks for past many years. Following the declaration of a measles outbreak in December 2022 by Ministry of Health, MSF advocated for a vaccination campaign in Lankien. As a result, other organisations conducted mass vaccination campaigns in the state targeting children 6 months to 9 years. In February 2023, we expanded the capacity of the measles isolation ward from 10 to 30 beds to treat the patients. MSF facility received around 100 patients in Lankien in three months.
