World Breastfeeding Week (August 1–7) is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and promoting support for breastfeeding families worldwide. The 2025 theme, “Breastfeeding: Let’s Make It Work,” underscores the urgent need to dismantle the social, economic, and institutional barriers that prevent mothers from breastfeeding successfully. It calls for coordinated efforts to create breastfeeding-friendly environments at home, in healthcare systems, and in humanitarian settings such as refugee camps.  In Dagahaley, MSF operates two health posts and one hospital, where daily health education on exclusive breastfeeding is provided by nutritionists and other healthcare workers. In the maternity ward, newborns are initiated to breastfeeding within minutes of birth, directly in the labor room, ensuring early skin-to-skin contact and immediate bonding. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to promote optimal breastfeeding practices and improve infant health outcomes from the very beginning of life. According to the World Health Organization, 60% of newborns in Kenya are breastfed within the first hour of birth and are exclusively breastfed for the first six months. However, a 2021 survey conducted by UNHCR, MSF, and partners in the Dadaab refugee camp found that exclusive breastfeeding rates in the camp were slightly lower, at 57.9%. Predominant breastfeeding, where infants receive both breastmilk and water, was reported at 70.2%.  Alarmingly, anemia affected 40% of children aged 6 to 23 months, underscoring the urgent need for improved infant nutrition and sustained breastfeeding support in the camp. Recent USAID funding cuts could further threaten breastfeeding outcomes in Dagahaley. These reductions may indirectly weaken essential systems that support mothers and infants, including food security, healthcare staffing, and nutrition-focused services. Without adequate access to food, counseling, and consistent care, mothers may struggle to maintain exclusive breastfeeding. In such vulnerable settings, these challenges could have lasting impacts on both infant health and survival.
