More than a month after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, the communities of Inle Lake in Southern Shan are still reeling from the impact.

This scenic lake is home to villages built on water, where families live in traditional wood and bamboo stilt houses. The earthquake left a trail of destruction around the lake—up to 90% of homes in some villages where MSF are responding were damaged or destroyed. Boats, vital for transport and livelihoods on the lake, were also wrecked. Clean water supplies have been disrupted and rebuilding is complicated by access on the water and soaring material costs.

Many families displaced by the quake are now sheltering in overcrowded homes, tents, or makeshift shelters on small patches of dry land around the lake. Our teams are working in four villages, delivering support: restoring clean water, distributing shelter materials and essential NFIs.
