Despite a strengthened rescue system on the French side, thanks to financial support from the United Kingdom (acquisition of drones, a helicopter dedicated to rescues, installation of detection and monitoring cameras on the coast, first aid training and recruitment of staff within the CROSS ), the humanitarian care provided by the authorities after a shipwreck or an unsuccessful attempt to cross, in particular psychological support and medical care, remains inadequate and unsuitable to the situation of people on the move.
- A traumatic event such as a shipwreck can lead to acute post-traumatic stress disorder if psychological debriefing is not offered within 72 hours of the event. Since January, the MSF psychologist in Calais has treated around sixty patients, including 18 people who witnessed or were victims of a shipwreck, a failed attempt to cross or other traumatic events. The patients treated by MSF show symptoms such as recurring nightmares, traumatic reliving, startle reactions, flashbacks during the day, hyper-vigilance and negative thoughts that can go as far as suicidal thoughts.
