Living and learning with epilepsy in Liberia

Médecins Sans Frontières has been providing care for people living with epilepsy in Montserrado County, Liberia, since 2017, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. More than 1,200 patients are involved with the program, and a quarter of them are school age. Taking a multi-disciplinary and holistic approach in five health centres across the county, the project teams provide clinical treatment and psychoeducation to the individuals living with epilepsy, and awareness-raising and other support in their community, to help reduce the barriers to being accepted in society.

N.B. This package features two school-aged children, their primary caregivers, their individual psychosocial workers and a senior representative from their individual schools. Surnames have been withheld as one identifying factor for the children and their caregivers, throughout the package.

ABOUT PETER

When teenage Peter, a school student in Monrovia, Liberia, started having epileptic seizures, a misdiagnosis only made things worse, and his mother feared he wouldn’t be able to return to school. Now on regular treatment, Peter looks forwarding to fulfilling his own dreams for the future, and his mother’s for him.

ABOUT MARY

When teenage Mary, a school student in Monrovia, Liberia, started having epileptic seizures last year, it was frightening and confusing for her and everyone around her. The Médecins Sans Frontières-supported epilepsy treatment program at Star of the Sea Health Centre has helped her family and community understand the condition so that Mary can draw on their support to stay in school.

ABOUT REEDER

S Wonka Reeder Senior started working with the epilepsy program in Montserrado County, home of Liberia’s capital, in 2020. Based in the Star of the Sea Health Centre, he is part of a team providing clinical treatment and psychosocial support for people living with epilepsy in the crowded West Point township, one of several sites across the county. He is a passionate advocate for the holistic approach that helps young people stay in school in Monrovia, Liberia.
