Outreach in remote communities around Bangassou

These photos were taken by anthropologist and health promoter Dale Koninckx in November 2020, during visits to remote towns and villages around Bangassou, in south-east Central African Republic.
The health needs in this remote area are “colossal”, says Dale, especially with regards to mother and child health; vaccination; and access to emergency care for people with severe illness, complications or trauma. Several armed groups are present in the area, and Dale says MSF’s principles of neutrality and impartiality are “crucial” to allowing the team to work safely and ensure access to everyone who needs care.
One journey Dale described involved five hours by car and additional five hours by motorbike. On arriving at their destination, the team supported the local health centre staff with training, as well as assessing basics like water and sanitation, electricity for cold chain. Meanwhile the health promotion team consulted the community about a new referral system that will mean people needing urgent care can be transferred to the hospital in Bangassou, 200km away.
