Challenges on access to lifesaving maternal care

Every two minutes, a woman dies from pregnancy or childbirth complications – most preventable. In conflict zones and displacement settings, the risks multiply: insecurity, poverty and collapsing health systems block access to care. In places like Nigeria, the Central African Republic and Bangladesh, reaching a clinic can mean long, dangerous journeys, while new user fees create further barriers. Additionally, women are often not free to decide when to seek medical assistance. Leading killers – eclampsia, haemorrhage, sepsis, obstructed labour and unsafe abortion – are treatable with timely intervention, yet delays in deciding, travelling and receiving care cost lives, but eventual cuts in humanitarian funding will make the situation even worse. MSF is working to bridge these gaps through free maternal services, emergency obstetric care and safe abortion
