Karuri MAT Clinic, Kiambu

Kiambu County comes fourth after Mombasa, Nairobi and Kilifi counties in numbers of people who use drugs (PWUDs), specifically heroin. A pertner, LVCT-Health found that there were more than 1,300 PWUDs in Kiambu from a mapping exercise in 2018, with only a small number having been enrolled in MAT clinics in Nairobi. The most affected sub-counties in Kiambu are Kiambaa, Juja, Thika, and Kikuyu.

The use of drugs, and particularly injecting drug use, is associated with adverse medical, social, financial, and legal consequences. The morbidity and mortality rate among People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) is unacceptably high due to delayed treatment access in case of drug overdose, mob justice and other forms of violence, HIV infection, infection with viral hepatitis and TB, and other co-morbid conditions.

In partnership with the County Government of Kiambu, NASCOP and LVCT-health, MSF has established a MAT clinic based at Karuri level 4 hospital. The MAT clinic offers a one-stop-clinic with free health care services for PWUDs. The clinic enrolled the first patients on the 18th of September 2019 after a February ground-breaking ceremony.

This one-stop clinic incorporates opioid substitution therapy and outpatient care including services for HIV, TB, mental health, wound care, sexual and reproductive health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), treatment for Hepatitis C (HCV), social support, and counselling with support for referrals for complicated cases. These with an aim to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with opioid drug use - mainly heroin.
