"Crew and survivors on board the Sea-Watch 4 are totally exhausted. Some of the people, who we rescued in the central Mediterranean, have been on board for over a week. We are providing and emergency response where states failing to do so. But now we are stranded at sea, penalised for trying to fill the gap that EU governments have left at the world's deadliest maritime border; men, women and children who were trying to escape Libya, again held in a state of emergency. The MSF medical humanitarian team onboard is extremely busy on deck and in the ship’s clinic, treating people for dehydration, fuel burns and physical trauma sustained while trying to cross. Some tell us they watched their companions drown during the journey. Despite witnessing some overwhelming displays of resiliency, there are now real concerns for the psychological wellbeing of these people, who have already endured enough. A rescue is only complete when the survivors are taken in a place of safety. The some 350 survivors on board the Sea-Watch 4 must be allowed to disembark.”
